  3. Windows 3.1+ Quick Start:
  4.     1.     Place CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  5.     2.     Click on "File" from the Program Manager╒s menu.
  6.     3.     Click "Run" from the File Menu.
  7.     4.     In the Run dialog box type D:\INSTALL.EXE 
  8.         (where ╥D╙ is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) 
  9.         and press "Enter."  This will run the World 
  10.         Factbook 1996 Edition installer and create a 
  11.         program group that you can use to run the 
  12.         World Factbook 1996 Edition directly from Windows.
  13.     5.    Double-click on the "QuickTime for Windows" icon 
  14.         in the World Factbook program group to install 
  15.         QuickTime for Windows (needed to run the movies).
  16.         Browse through the World Factbook 1996 Edition 
  17.         using the friendly interface.
  18.         
  19. Windows 95 Quick Start:
  20.     1.    Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  21.     2.    The Windows 95 auto-run feature will automatically 
  22.         load the World Factbook 1996. Browse through the 
  23.         World Factbook 1996 Edition using the friendly interface.

  27. Getting around in this program:
  28. The First "Main" screen allows you to choose how to access the
  29. information about the 266 world entities or countries.
  30.  
  31. 7 choices:
  32.  
  33.  (1) Multimedia Elements. 
  34. View 200 photographs from around the world.  See the countries up
  35. close!  Play a slide show of all the images (click the slide show button) or
  36. select the image by name (scroll the list of images and click on the text to
  37. view).20 + movies, flags, charts, or languages.
  38.  
  39.  (2) Geographic Search.
  40. Select countries geographically by region.  
  41. See where the countries are in each region.
  42. Navigate between regions.
  43.  
  44.  (3) Outline Search.
  45. Lists of the various types of information available.
  46. These lists are of countries by type of information available. 
  47. (choose by country name).Also includes lists of other information 
  48. -- Charts, Terror groups, State Department Travel Topics, and Appendices.
  49.  
  50.  (4) Word Search.
  51. Quickly get a list of all the text portions with a search string.
  52. Then click on any list item to go there.The search string can be: a country 
  53. name or any text. This search string can be more than one word and have boolean
  54. operators AND, OR
  55. Examples:
  56. UNITED KINGDOM
  57.    (this is a search for the words "UNITED" AND "KINGDOM" and the
  58. results would be text portions with both words. This is equivalent to 
  59. UNITED AND KINGDOM.
  60.  
  61. TERRORIST OR CARBOMBINGS OR TERRORISTS
  62.    (this is a search for any of three words TERRORIST, CARBOMBINGS,
  63. TERRORISTS the results would be text protions with any of the three words.)
  64. Searching works best one word, multiple words with AND between.

  78. At the bottom of each screen (except main) is standard set of
  79. options, including a way of getting back to the main screen.

  81. Tips and Techniques:
  82. How do I find something in this program:
  83. (searching for specific information)

  85.    How to do a general search:
  86.            From "Main" press the " Word Search" button, now press the
  87.         button
  88.        "New Search" after the text you want to search is entered.
  89.        An example would be that you know "Mugabe"
  90.        is the leader of some country -- but you don't know which one.
  91.        Search for Mugabe to find out!
  92.  
  93.    How to do a specific search:
  94.       - You want to know the ranking of Burkina's death rate in the
  95.         world. Select "Outline Search" from "Main", click on  "Charts" on
  96.         left and then "Death rate" in the list.  Now click on the "Find
  97.         within Card" button and type Burkina.
  98.         The High to Low list will highlight and scroll down to the
  99.         entry if Burkina is ranked.
  100.       - You want to know the date that Kazakhstan was established as 
  101.         a country.  From "Main": click on the "Outline Search" , 
  102.         now click on "Countries"
  103.  
  104. Using the "Go Back" button for repeated accessing of information 
  105.  from the same screen.  Some examples:
  106.            From the "Main" screen click on a continent such as
  107.            "Africa", Click on "Southern Africa", now click on a country 
  108.            button. View the information/maps etc.  Click "Go Back" to 
  109.            return to "Southern Africa", now click on another country button.
  110. From the "Main" screen click on the "Outline Search" button and then select 
  111.            "Charts" on left, now scroll the list of comparison 
  112.            statistics/charts and select one to inspect by clicking on
  113.            its text.  
  114.            Read the rankings/search/view the charts.
  115.            Now click on "Go Back" to return to the "Charts" listing.
